Roles & Responsibilities
As a SEND Session Assistant, your day-to-day will be dynamic, active, and deeply rewarding. You will
- Provide 1:1 or small group support to learners with complex Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), adapting your approach to their individual learning and emotional needs
- Confidently lead or assist in sessions involving therapeutic farm and domestic animals, ensuring safe interaction, animal welfare, and positive learner engagement
- Facilitate outdoor learning sessions, utilizing nature, sensory gardens, and open spaces to promote well-being and practical skills
- Prepare, set up, and pack away tailored learning resources and sensory activities before and after sessions
- Ensure the learning environments - both indoor classrooms and outdoor farm/nature spaces-remain clean, safe, organized, and vibrant
- Implement positive behavior management strategies and emotional regulation techniques in line with school policies
- Monitor learners' progress and well-being during sessions, providing constructive feedback to teachers, care coordinators, or parents
Qualifications & Experiences
We are looking for passionate individuals who thrive in non-traditional educational settings. To join our talent pool, you will need
- 1–3 years of experience as a Session Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Support Worker, or a similar role supporting individuals with complex needs.
- A strong background or proven experience supporting learners with SEND (e.g., ASD, ADHD, SEMH, profound and multiple learning difficulties.
- Documented experience or a high level of comfort working in outdoor learning environments and interacting with therapeutic farm and domestic animals
- Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills, with an understanding of (or willingness to learn) alternative communication methods like Makaton or PECS.
- Right to work in the UK
- An enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or a willingness to obtain one)
- Desirable (but not essential): Qualifications in Education, Health & Social Care, Animal Care, or Land-based studies
- Certifications in Team Teach, positive handling, or outdoor first aid.
